Charles Leclerc Triumphs At Silverstone In An Incredible British Grand Prix Moment

Charles Leclerc returned to the top step of the podium at the British Grand Prix, ending a 37-race wait for victory and delivering Ferrari’s 250th Formula 1 win after a tense finish under the safety car at Silverstone.

Leclerc started alongside polesitter Kimi Antonelli but seized the lead on the opening lap with a decisive move. From that moment, Leclerc controlled the race, while Max Verstappen crashed out with four laps left while trying to chase long-time rival Lewis Hamilton, triggering the late safety car.

The safety car followed Verstappen’s accident, and Ferrari reacted by pitting both Leclerc and Hamilton. The strategy protected Leclerc’s lead, yet Hamilton lost out to former Mercedes team-mate George Russell, which prevented Ferrari from securing a first Silverstone one-two since Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello achieved the feat 24 years earlier.

Leclerc acknowledged that the ninth Grand Prix victory of the career did not match the ideal script, yet the result still carried huge meaning. Ferrari moved further clear of McLaren in the all-time wins list, with the Scuderia sitting on 250 victories compared with McLaren’s 203.

Leclerc’s success at Silverstone brought an end to a personal drought that stretched back to the United States Grand Prix in October 2024, the last occasion Leclerc won a race. It also marked a first podium since a third-place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix in March, underlining how difficult recent months had been.

Between the 2024 win and this British Grand Prix, Leclerc finished on the podium 12 times without winning, more than any other current driver. Pierre Gasly had two such podiums in that span, while Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg and Isack Hadjar each recorded one.

Leclerc’s maiden victory at Silverstone became the eighth different Grand Prix where Leclerc has taken a win. Italy remains the only venue where Leclerc has triumphed twice, with successes at Monza in 2019 and again in 2024, highlighting how varied Leclerc’s winning record now is across the calendar.

Charles Leclerc British Grand Prix win for Ferrari after form swings

The upturn came against the backdrop of improving results for team-mate Hamilton. Hamilton secured a first Ferrari win in Barcelona last month, and Hamilton has appeared on the podium in four of the last five races, adding extra internal pressure as Leclerc tried to rediscover confidence in the car.

Leclerc’s immediate reaction over the radio captured the emotions of the wait. "Finally! This one feels particularly good, even though I wished for a bit of a more normal ending, but hard work paid off. Tough times never last, only tough people last!"

The build-up to Silverstone had been tough. In Monaco, Leclerc crashed in qualifying, then an issue in the race ended the challenge. The Barcelona weekend began with promising speed on Saturday, yet Leclerc crashed again, which created another mental setback, before a separate car problem on Sunday ruined the race.

Leclerc explained how the performance swing unfolded at Silverstone. "It feels incredible," Leclerc added. "Maybe it did not finish the way I would have dreamed of, but to win after the last few weekends that have been particularly difficult is incredible. All the work that we put into trying to get the feeling back in the car. I felt like I had found something [on Saturday]between the sprint race and qualifying, but I had to confirm that, and [in the race] the feeling was back where it needs to be, so I'm so incredibly happy."

Looking back on the recent run of races, Leclerc added: "After Monaco, the feeling wasn't there. I crashed in qualifying, then in the race we had an issue, and that ended our race. Then, Saturday in Barcelona, the feeling was good, but then I crashed again, so that was very difficult mentally. And then on Sunday, we had an issue with the car, and Austria wasn't so great, but here we managed to put everything together, and I really hope I can keep that momentum going forward. And a huge thank you to the team for having worked so hard."

Ferrari’s British Grand Prix result delivered key milestones for team and driver, ended Leclerc’s long wait for a win, confirmed progress after several setbacks, and set up the second half of the 2026 season with renewed confidence inside the garage.
