Charles Leclerc Surprises With Most Unexpected Pole Position At Hungary Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc claimed an unexpected pole position at the Hungary Grand Prix, outpacing Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. This marks a significant achievement for Leclerc as he navigated challenging qualifying conditions.

Charles Leclerc secured a surprising pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leaving both McLaren drivers behind. He edged out Oscar Piastri by just 0.026 seconds, with Lando Norris trailing by an additional 0.041 seconds. This marked Leclerc's first pole in 2025 and his first since Azerbaijan last year.

McLaren had dominated all practice sessions, making them favourites for qualifying. However, neither Piastri nor Norris could maintain their lead in the final session. Leclerc capitalised on this opportunity, expressing disbelief at his achievement. "Today, I don't understand anything at Formula 1," he said.

Leclerc Takes Unexpected Pole in Hungary

Leclerc described the qualifying as extremely challenging, noting difficulties in reaching Q2 and Q3. He aimed for a clean lap to secure third place but ended up on pole instead. "I definitely did not expect that," he admitted, highlighting the unexpected nature of his success.

The weather played a significant role during qualifying, with rain affecting grip levels. Leclerc felt the grip change acutely due to lower downforce settings and hoped the rain wouldn't persist in Q2. Fortunately for him, conditions improved, allowing him to secure pole position.

Race Day Prospects

When asked about his chances on race day, Leclerc emphasised the importance of a strong start and navigating Turn 1 effectively. "I have no idea how it will go," he said, "but I'll do absolutely everything to keep that first place." Securing the lead early would simplify the rest of the race for him.

Not all was positive for Ferrari as Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q2 and will start from 12th position. Meanwhile, George Russell's Mercedes will join Norris on the second row in fourth place.

Qualifying Results Overview

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll secured fifth and sixth positions respectively. Gabriel Bortoleto took seventh place ahead of reigning champion Max Verstappen, who managed only eighth for Red Bull. The Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar completed the top ten.
