Chautala praises Haryana athletes for winning runners-up trophy

By Staff

Chandigarh, Nov 28 (UNI) Haryana State Athletic Association (HSAA) president Abhey Singh Chautala today congratulated the Haryana athletes for finishing overall runners-up in the four-day 23rd Junior National Athletic Championship which concluded at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh yesterday.

The Haryana athletes struck a rich haul of medals--nine gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals. Praising the players, Mr Chautala, who is also president of the Haryana Olympic Association, said that only one national record was established in the meet and the credit went to Sudhir Kumar of Haryana who obliterated the old national record of 7.32 metres, with a leap of 7.33 metres. Satish of Delhi had established the old national record in 1999.

''Display by Haryana athletes has more significance since the state government had not given any financial or technical support to the athletes and association for their participation in the Championship,'' he said.

''These athletes and medal winners belong to Haryana. The state government should give the sportspersons all possible assistance to bring laurels to the state. I urge the government to honour the medal winners as per the state government's policy,'' said Mr Chautala.
