Chawla is the next leg spinning star: Jenner

Chennai, Sep 19 (UNI) Former Aussie leg spinner Terry Jenner is impressed by India's up and coming leggie Piyush Chawla but is of the opinion that the young Uttar Pradesh tweaker must be playing more of Test cricket first.

''He is quite clearly the next one. He has a big heart. I would turn on the tv if I know that he is playing and that's a big complement,'' Jenner, the mentor of the world's best (leg) spinner Shane Warne observed at a press conference here last night.

Jenner, the former Western Australia leg spinning all-rounder from 1967 to 77, who is here to conduct a specialised camp for about 25 trainees including two from Bangladesh at the MAC Spin Foundation said like his ward Shane Warne who first played about 20 Test matches before joining Australia's ODI squad, Piyush should have played more Tests.

Speaking in terms of technique required for budding spinners, Jenner said Chawla's alignment was good. ''Many young boys at the Spin Foundation complicate the bowling action and a few don't get their alignment right. The primary task of a coach is to encourage a young spinner to spin the ball correctly first,'' Jenner observed.

Jenner also said that Chawla must develop more variation. ''He keeps on bowling leg breaks only at the moment,'' he added.
