Chawla''s inclusion in WC squad not a surprise: coach

Kanpur, Jan 18 (PTI) Former cricketer and coach of UttarPradesh cricket team Gyanendra Pandey today said that PiyushChawla''s inclusion in the 15-member World Cup squad iscompletely justified and has not come as a surprise.

"There is no surprise in his (Chawla) selection. He hasbeen doing well in the domestic circuit and we were confidentthat he will make it to the World Cup squad," Pandey, who hasbeen working with the leg-spinner for the past four years,told PTI.

The 22-year-old, who last played a one-day match forIndia in 2008, was yesterday picked in the national squadahead of Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra, who have been morefrequently featuring in the limited-over squad in recenttimes.

Emphasising on the recent run by the youngster, Pandeysaid, "It is totally incorrect to raise question marks againsthis selection. Over the last couple of years he has not onlyperformed in the Ranji trophy but his record in Duleep trophyand Deodhar trophy with both bat and the ball has also beenvery good.

"Considering his run at the domestic level, his selectioncould not have been overlooked," he added.

The coach also hailed Chawla''s fine track record againstthe foreign players, saying, "He has been very effectiveagainst the foreigners and since the World Cup is in thesub-continent it will definitely help the spinners.

"If he gets a chance he will show his skills not onlywith the ball but also with the bat. He can also makesignificant contributions in the fielding department."

Pandey was also ecstatic about the inclusion of the othertwo cricketers from Uttar Pradesh in Suresh Raina and PraveenKumar in the World Cup squad, though, he reiterated that theirselection for the sporting extravaganza was expected.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA)also welcomed the selection of Piyush Chawla and said althoughthe cricketer has been out of action from the internationalscene but he has been consistently delivering as an usefulallrounder at the domestic level.

Hailing the selection of three cricketers from the Statein the final fifteen for the first time in the cricketinghistory, Director of UPCA, Jyoti Bajpai said, "I wish allthree players from the State play an important role in thetournament and help the team win the World Cup for India."
