Chennai Grand Masters 2024: Arjun Erigaisi, leading the Masters section in the fifth round, was held to a draw by Iranian GM Parham Maghsoodloo on Saturday, November 9, disrupting his streak and preventing him from building on his lead.
With four points out of five, the Indian GM remains at the top of the leaderboard but now feels increased pressure from Levon Aronian, who is closing the gap after a decisive win against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Arjun’s recent form has been impressive, with back-to-back wins before meeting Maghsoodloo. However, the Iranian, showing remarkable skill, played a near-perfect game that stymied Arjun’s ambitions for a hat-trick of victories.
By neutralising Erigaisi’s advances, Maghsoodloo became just the second player in this tournament to hold the Indian prodigy to a draw, showcasing the depth and resilience that the top players bring to Chennai this year.
Meanwhile, Levon Aronian put on a masterful display against French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, capturing a vital win that moves him closer to the top. Aronian’s positional finesse was on full display as he capitalised on an unusual knight exchange from Vachier-Lagrave, which weakened the Frenchman’s position significantly.
Demonstrating his superior understanding of the position, Aronian orchestrated an attack that ultimately overwhelmed his opponent, elevating him to second place, just half a point behind Arjun.
Other notable matches in the Masters section included Vidit Gujrathi’s hard-fought draw against Iranian GM Amin Tabatabaei, who managed to contain Vidit despite the latter’s aggressive strategy. Aravindh Chithambaram, on the other hand, continued his trend of draws, sharing points with Serbian GM Alexey Sarana in another well-contested game.
In the Challengers category, the momentum shifted as GM Raunak Sadhwani halted Pranav Venkatesh’s impressive four-game winning streak. While the game ended in a draw, Raunak’s defensive play demonstrated the skill needed to stop Pranav’s dominant form. Pranav, however, still holds a full point lead over his competitors and remains a strong favourite in the Challengers section.
With just two rounds remaining, Arjun Erigaisi’s leadership remains under threat, especially with in-form players like Aronian narrowing the margin. Round six will be crucial as Arjun looks to regain momentum and stave off his closest rivals in the race for the title at this year's Chennai Grand Masters.
