Chennai Open-2009 starts from January

Chennai, Aug 19 (UNI) The Chennai Open-2009, the prestigious ATP World Tour event, would be held at the SAF Games Tennis Stadium from January five to 11.

Into its 11th year, the tournament was being organised by the IMG with funding from a Consortium of Sponsors, including a grant of Rs one crore from the Tamil Nadu Government.

A cheque for Rs one crore for organising the event in January 2009 was handed over to the Tamil Nadu Tennis Assocation by SDAT Member Secretary M R Mohan in the presence of State Sports Minister T P M Moideen Khan.

An official release here said the Government also sanctioned an interest free loan of Rs 2.5 crore for taking up preliminary works for organising the tournament.

The tournament has been rated as one of the major events in AITA Calendar and has drawn top class players like Rafael Nadal, Paradorn Sripchapan, Carlos Moya, Boris Becker and Patrick Rafter.
