Budapest, September 21: Round 9 of the 2024 Chess Olympiad saw mixed outcomes for the Indian chess teams. Both the Indian men's and women's teams managed to secure hard-fought draws against Uzbekistan and the United States, respectively.
With closely contested battles, the Indian teams displayed resilience and tactical depth but were unable to break through to secure outright victories.

The Indian men's team took on Uzbekistan, in what turned out to be a tactical showdown. All four matches on the board ended in draws, resulting in a 2-2 scoreline between the two nations.
On Board 1, GM Gukesh Dommaraju (2764) faced GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2766) in a clash of two young prodigies. Both players showed deep understanding of the position, leading to a well-fought draw after ½-½.
On Board 2, GM Praggnanandhaa R (2750), coming off a series of strong performances in earlier rounds, locked horns with GM Javokhir Sindarov (2677). Praggnanandhaa navigated through complications, and after exchanging several pieces, the game ended in another solid draw, ½-½.
GM Arjun Erigaisi (2778), playing on Board 3, faced GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (2650). Despite having the rating advantage, Arjun couldn't break through Vokhidov's defenses, and the game concluded with a third draw, ½-½.
On the final board, GM Vidit Gujrathi (2720) went up against GM Jakhongir Vakhidov (2571). Vidit, known for his calm and methodical approach, ensured that India secured yet another draw, rounding off the encounter at ½-½. With four evenly contested games, India and Uzbekistan ended their match tied at 2-2.
The Indian women's team, meanwhile, faced off against the formidable United States squad. In a match that had its share of ups and downs, both teams ultimately settled for a 2-2 draw.
On the top board, GM Vaishali R (2498) came up against IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova (2380). Vaishali found herself in a difficult position, and despite her best efforts, she succumbed to a loss, 0-1.
However, IM Vantika Agrawal (2370) provided a crucial win for India on Board 3, defeating GM Irina Krush (2396) in a well-played game. Vantika's win was vital in keeping India's hopes alive.
On Board 2, IM Divya Deshmukh (2483) faced IM Carissa Yip (2386). After a tense battle, both players agreed to a draw, ½-½.
The final game on Board 4 saw IM Tania Sachdev (2386) going head-to-head with IM Alice Lee (2384). In a closely fought encounter, Tania held her ground, securing a ½-½ draw.
In Round 8 of the Chess Olympiad 2024, India's men's team delivered a commanding 3.5-0.5 victory over Iran. GM Gukesh Dommaraju led the charge with a decisive win against GM Parham Maghsoodloo, while GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Vidit Gujrathi also secured victories. GM Praggnanandhaa R added half a point with a solid draw against GM Amin Tabatabaei, rounding off a dominant performance by the Indian men.
On the other hand, India's women's team fell narrowly to Poland, losing 1.5-2.5. IM Divya Deshmukh gave India hope with a crucial win against IM Aleksandra Maltsevskaya, while IM Vantika Agrawal drew her game. However, losses by GM Harika Dronavalli and GM Vaishali R on the top two boards handed Poland the victory.
