Chess World Championship: When & Where Will Gukesh Face Challenger Javokhir Sindarov?

New Delhi, July 28: Defending champion Gukesh Dommaraju will take on Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov in the FIDE World Championship Match 2026, with the title clash set to be staged in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 25 to December 15. In a historic first for world chess, both players will be just 20 years old when the match begins, making it the youngest World Championship contest ever.

The Gukesh-Sindarov showdown is being billed as a landmark moment for world chess, symbolising a generational shift as two of the game's brightest young talents compete for the sport's biggest prize. With both players set to be just 20 years old when the match begins, the contest marks the youngest FIDE World Championship clash in history.

Where Will Gukesh Face Javokhir Sindarov?

FIDE Interim President Viswanathan Anand said several nations, including India, the United States and Cyprus, had expressed interest in hosting the championship before Geneva was selected as the neutral venue.

"After carefully considering all the proposals, FIDE has decided to stage the match on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva, a city with a historic tradition of bringing nations and cultures together. We look forward to welcoming the global chess community to Switzerland, while millions of fans around the globe can follow the battle online."

The World Championship will be contested over 14 classical games, with the first player to score 7.5 points claiming the title. If the scores are tied at 7-7, the champion will be decided through a series of tiebreak games.

Gukesh enters the contest as the defending champion after creating history in Singapore in 2024, where he defeated China's Ding Liren in the final classical game to become the youngest-ever world champion at the age of 18.

Sindarov, on the other hand, earned his title by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus with a round to spare. The Uzbek grandmaster arrives in Geneva in impressive form, having also captured the 2025 FIDE World Cup, setting up a blockbuster battle between two rising stars at the pinnacle of world chess.
