Chess Champ Anand returns after winning World Chess Championship

By Super Admin

Chennai, May 24 (ANI): Viswanathan Anand was given a warm welcome by his fans in Chennai on Sunday for winning the World Chess Championship for the fourth time.

Anand's wife, Aruna, said she felt happy about his win.

"It is an excellent victory because with this victory it put him in the all-time greats in the chess. Personally, I feel very happy because he played very well, he kept up with the pressure and he showed a lot of mental toughness," said Aruna.

"It feels great to be back in Chennai with all you people giving a great welcome," she added.

Anand's father, K Viswanathan said the win had not gone to Anand's head and that the Grandmaster retains his humility.

"Especially proud of his humility, his loving for the parents and general behaviour. The victory has not gone into his head as a champion he doesn't throw his weight around," said K Viswanathan.

Viswanathan Anand retained the title with his win over Veselin Topalov in Sofia, Bulgaria, making it his third title in a row and fourth overall.

He won the game 6.5-5.5 in the 12th round of the play.

Forty-year-old Anand had earlier won the championship in 2002, 2008 and 2009.

He earned 1.2 million euros for the win. (ANI)
