The Oklahoma City Thunder have secured another key player for their future, as Chet Holmgren has agreed to a five-year maximum rookie contract extension. ESPN reports that this deal will start in the 2026-27 season, offering Holmgren $239 million guaranteed, with potential incentives raising it to $250 million. This follows Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's recent four-year, $285 million extension through 2030-31.
Holmgren returned from a fractured pelvis to play a crucial role in the Thunder's first NBA title since relocating from Seattle. Despite being limited to 32 regular-season games, he averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks. In the postseason, he played all 23 games, improving his averages to 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks.

During the 2023-24 season, Holmgren was second in Rookie of the Year voting behind Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs. He averaged 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks while playing all 82 games. His defensive presence helped Oklahoma City limit opponents to a league-low field goal percentage of 43.6 in the following season.
Holmgren faced significant injury challenges early in his career. After being drafted second overall by the Thunder in 2022, he missed the entire following season due to surgery on his right foot's Lisfranc injury. Last season, he was out for nearly three months after fracturing his pelvis during a game against the Golden State Warriors.
With both Gilgeous-Alexander and Holmgren secured for the long term, ESPN notes that Oklahoma City's next priority is negotiating an extension for Jalen Williams. The All-Star forward is eligible for a new deal on his rookie contract this summer.
The Thunder's strategic moves aim to solidify their roster for continued success in upcoming seasons by retaining key players like Holmgren and Gilgeous-Alexander under long-term contracts.
