Chiefs Fans Pile on Taylor Swift for Super Bowl 59 Loss: Virat Kohli & Anushka Sharma Can Relate to This Misogynistic Blame Game

It's not the music, it's not the stars. It's not even the game. Sometimes, the real issue is the space where we've forgotten how to separate the personal from the professional. A line from an old song, but it hits the nail right on the head when we see the kind of treatment that Taylor Swift received at the Super Bowl this year. Fans, still nursing the sting of the Chiefs' defeat to the Eagles, took their frustrations out on the pop star.

Yes, fans weren't angry at the team, they weren't screaming at the coaches. They were upset with her. Because apparently, her presence at the game was somehow responsible for the loss. Sound familiar?

Super Bowl

This kind of misplaced blame isn't just reserved for Taylor. It's a cycle we've seen time and time again. Remember when Anushka Sharma was blamed for Virat Kohli's poor performance during the 2023 World Test Championship?

The Blame Game: Why Taylor Swift Got Booed

Super Bowl 59 saw a shocking turn of events: as Taylor Swift appeared on the Jumbotron, loud boos rained down from the stands. Why? Because she's dating Travis Kelce, star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, who, unfortunately, couldn't pull through in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles. But hold on-did the Chiefs lose because of her? Did Swift take the field and miss a catch? Did she call the plays? Of course not. Yet, somehow, she was a target for the boos.

According to a source close to Travis Kelce (per Daily Mail), he felt completely helpless watching his girlfriend being heckled. He knew the real reason behind the loud jeers, but the fact that she was being blamed for something entirely out of her control only added salt to the wound. "Travis was aware of Taylor getting booed and he felt helpless. Seeing the look on her face got to him," the insider said. For Kelce, this was just one more layer of frustration on top of what was already a tough night, with his team losing and the stadium filled with Eagles fans.

Adding to the bitter irony, even former President Donald Trump jumped into the mix, poking fun at Swift's appearance. "The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!" Trump remarked on Truth Social.

The Echoes of Misogyny in Sports

This wasn't an isolated case, nor is it new. Women in the spotlight, particularly the wives and girlfriends of athletes, often find themselves caught in the crossfire when their partners fall short. Anushka Sharma, actress and wife of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, faced similar trolling during the 2023 World Test Championship final.

After Virat's unfortunate early dismissal in the match, many social media users took to blaming Sharma, saying her presence at the stadium was bad luck for the team. It wasn't the first time she had faced such ridicule. The idea that her emotional support or mere attendance could somehow influence Kohli's on-field performance was absurd, but that didn't stop the hate from pouring in.

Such incidents aren't just frustrating; they are a stark reflection of the deep-rooted misogyny that continues to pervade sports culture. The narrative often painted is that women, despite not being involved in the actual game, are held responsible for the outcomes. When athletes lose, the first instinct for many is to attack the woman standing by their side. This is a toxic pattern we need to break.

The Unfair Double Standard

While female athletes' partners bear the brunt of this blame game, their male counterparts rarely face similar treatment. Take Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, for example. Ohanian has been a constant presence at Serena's matches, but not once has he been blamed when she faced a tough loss. The same can be said for Simone Biles and her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens. They've weathered the ups and downs of their careers, but Jonathan has never been held responsible for Biles' defeats.

It's time we rethink this absurdity. Female athletes' partners shouldn't be viewed as lightning rods for failure simply because of their association with their significant others. If we're truly going to start treating all athletes with respect, we must start by dismantling the archaic mindset that places the blame on women who are merely there to support their partners.

Taylor Swift didn't play in the game, she wasn't in charge of the Chiefs' strategy, and yet, she bore the brunt of the fans' misplaced anger. The same goes for Anushka Sharma. And unfortunately, this cycle isn't likely to stop until we call out this misogynistic double standard and stop allowing women to be the punching bags for men's failures. Until then, we'll continue to witness this unfair blame game play out on repeat.

Ergo, the next time you see a woman supporting her partner on the field, remember: She's not the reason the game was lost.
