China wins Asian women boxing championship

By Staff

Guwahati, Sept 30 : China won the 4th Asian Women Boxing championship held in Guwahati.

The Chinese girls won six gold medals to outshine North Korea and India. India had won the last Asian Championship.

The Indian pugilists were nowhere near their previous performance in which they got outings on the top of the podium. This time they finished with only three gold medals.

The North Korean team bagged four gold medals to finish second in the tourney.

For India, the gold winning performances came from Sarita Devi, Nagisettysha and Kalpana Chaudhary.

The bout of Sarita Devi in the bantamweight category was a hard fought one as her Chinese opponent Ren Cancan fought fiercely to finish the final with a tie at five points each but Devi was declared winner on a better technical show.

"I am feeling happy that I could continue my winning spree. Initially, I was afraid that I would not be able to fight as I had pain in the stomach. But doctor administered an injection for that and gave me medicine which enabled me to enter the ring," said Devi.

Usha defeated I Zhuldizay of Kazakhstan, by a margin of seven to one points; in the featherweight category while Choudhary, won gold in the 50 Kg category by defeating Ngo Thi Phuang, of Vietnam.

However, the biggest disappointment for the spectators was the loss of three time world champion M C Marykom, as she stumbled at the final hurdle only to manage silver.

"This performance is a result of barely two months practice. However, I am expecting a better show at the world championship, which will be held in China in November. I am aiming to work hard for that," said Marykom.

In the championship, eleven countries with a total of 79 pugilists participated.
