Christian Horner expressed his surprise as he bid farewell to Red Bull with an emotional address to the team. After two decades with the team, Horner was informed of his departure on Tuesday and had the opportunity to say goodbye on Wednesday. Laurent Mekies has taken over as Red Bull's new team principal, succeeding Horner.
Horner's tenure began in 2005, coinciding with Red Bull's debut season in Formula One. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant success, securing six constructors' and eight drivers' championships. Max Verstappen's fourth consecutive world title last year marked their latest triumph.

This season has been challenging for Red Bull. They currently sit fourth in the team standings, trailing McLaren by 288 points. Ferrari and Mercedes are also ahead of them. Verstappen is 69 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, who has won five races this season.
The team's performance began to decline midway through the 2024 season when they lost the constructor's title to McLaren. This marked McLaren's first win since 1998. The reasons behind Horner's replacement remain undisclosed.
Horner shared his thoughts on leaving: "Yesterday, I was informed by Red Bull that operationally I would no longer be involved with the business or the team moving forward," he told Sky Sports. Despite remaining employed by the company, he will no longer have an operational role.
"It came as a shock to myself," Horner continued. "I've had a chance to reflect over the last 12 hours and wanted to stand in front of all of you to break this news and to express my gratitude to each and every single member of the team that has given so much during the last 20-and-a-half years."
Reflecting on his journey, Horner recalled joining a relatively unknown team two decades ago. "When I arrived 20 years ago, there were a few less grey hairs," he said. He was warmly welcomed and played a key role in transforming Red Bull into a dominant force in Formula One.
Horner described being part of Red Bull as "the biggest privilege" of his life. His contributions have left an indelible mark on both the team and the sport.
