Coach designs new vault for Rio Olympics star Dipa Karmakar

By Sujata Sarkar

Kolkata, Dec 2: Bisweswar Nandy, the coach of Dipa Karmarkar has designed a new vault for his student. That is Straight Front Summersault with 540-degree turn. The reason behind such plans, being made by Nandi, was that World Gymnastics Federation's decision to reduce difficulty points of Produnova vault after the Rio Olympics.

Nandy however when asked about the new vault, unwillingly replied, "Nothing has been finalised. I am just in the process to explore new style of vaults for Dipa before the Asian championship, scheduled to be held in 2017. I can say one thing that I must have to introduce one new vault for Dipa as points in the difficulty category of Produnova has already been reduced by world body."

But at the same time, according to sources close to Nandy, the experienced coach has already made painting of straight front summersault vault with 540-degree turn on a paper and on the big blackboard at the Netaji Subhas regional coaching centre where Nandy has started fitness training for Dipa.

And the fourth-placed gymnast in the vault section in Rio Olympics has also reportedly laid a design of the vault personally in her home and began to take mental preparation.

In Rio Olympics, legendary gymnast of Uzbekistan Oksana Chusovitina demonstrated this vault.

Dipa however will try to continue Skuhara and Produnova also. But a sect5ion of former Indian gymnasts have raised questions that it might not be possible for Dipa to demonstrate Produnova and Straight Front Summersault vault in a same event as it will be rule violation.

Both Produnova and the new vault have got a similar front-face approach which cannot be shown simultaneously. So, the gymnast must have to change the style if he or she wants to deliver both these vaults together.

Dipa and her coach is scheduled to resume training of Produnova in New Delhi from the early of next month.
