Coach turns emotional after Devendra Jhajhari decides to donate money for modern equipment

Bengaluru, Sep 15: Sunil Tanwar was himself a javelin thrower. Now he is called one of the specialist javelin coaches in India. He has been an employee at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre in Hissar.

But he does not get time to train his students there at Hissar SAI Centre. He is so precise and dedicated towards his coaching that most of the time he is called up in the national preparatory camps for Paralympics training.

Such was the case 3 years ago when Tanwwar was handed over one of the jewels in the crown in the field of Paralympics. That was he got Devendra Jhajharia as one of his students at the Gandhi Nagar SAI Centre.

Immediately after Devendra joined Gandhi Nagar SAI he received a severe injury in his shoulder and with the injury, Devendra could not make movement of his right hand which was his only hand.

Actually Devendra's shoulder started getting locked. So, for around two weeks the Javelin thrower could not train and became frustrated.

Tanwar was the man who helped Devendra to recover. He made a special kind of medical ball and every night Devendra, following his coach's advice pressed the ball on his shoulder few hours before going to bed.

Tanwar, speaking over phone from Hissar on Wednesday (September 14), after his student created history by breaking his own world record and claiming gold in Rio Paralympics, said, "Devendra called me today, early morning and after giving a lot of thanks he said he wants to donate some money to buy a couple of modern javelins made of fibers for the few physically challenged (specially abled) javelin throwers who have been training at Hissar SAI Centre. I was simply emotional to have heard that Devendra has not forgotten his struggling days when he practised with a wooden-made javelin."

Tanwar also revealed that, every time at Gandhi Nagar SAI he himself demonstrated every physical exercise and technique of throwing javelin and then inspired Devendra to follow him.

Tanwar said, "All the exercises and throwing were first made by myself and then I asked him saying, I have done, so you would also be able to do this. In this way I had encouraged him all the time."
