Commonwealth Games 2026: Relay Star Rajesh Ramesh Eyes Memorable Debut in Glasgow

Indian quarter-miler Rajesh Ramesh is all set to make his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, and is expected to play a pivotal role in India's recent relay success.

At 27, the Tamil Nadu sprinter has emerged as one of the country's most dependable 400m runners and will be aiming to add another milestone to his growing international résumé.

Over the past few seasons, Rajesh has established himself as a key member of India's relay squads. At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, he helped India secure the men's 4x400m relay gold while also contributing to the mixed 4x400m relay team that claimed silver. His impressive run continued in 2023, where he won gold in the mixed relay and silver in the men's relay at the Asian Athletics Championships.

One of the defining moments of his career came at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, where he was part of the Indian quartet that rewrote the Asian record in the men's 4x400m relay with a remarkable timing of 2:59.05. Rajesh also boasts an individual 400m personal best of 45.26 seconds, underlining his credentials as one of India's leading active quarter-milers.

Ahead of his maiden appearance at the Commonwealth Games, the Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) supported athlete Rajesh said wearing the Indian colours remains the greatest honour and expressed his determination to perform at his best while helping the relay team achieve success.

"Representing India at the Commonwealth Games is a dream I've worked towards for many years. Every opportunity to wear the Indian Jersey is special, and making my Commonwealth Games debut makes this even more meaningful. My focus is on giving my absolute best, staying composed under pressure and contributing to the team's success. We've prepared well, and I'm excited to compete against some of the best athletes in the world while making India proud." said Rajesh.

Rajesh also acknowledged the role played by the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), crediting the high-performance environment for enabling him to consistently compete at the elite level.

"The Inspire Institute of Sport has been an important part of my journey. From coaching and sports science to recovery, nutrition and strength training, everything I need to perform at the highest level is available. Having such a strong support system allows me to focus entirely on improving as an athlete, and I'm grateful to everyone who has been part of my journey," he said.

Reflecting on India's rise in relay events, Rajesh believes the team's progress has been driven by sustained hard work, mutual belief and the confidence that Indian athletes can challenge the world's best.

"Indian athletics has come a long way, especially in the relay events. We have shown that we can compete with the best teams in the world, and that's a result of years of hard work and training. Every major championship motivates us to keep raising the standards and inspire the next generation of athletes." he added.

Speaking about his preparations for Glasgow, Rajesh highlighted the importance of maintaining consistency throughout training and recovery while trusting the process leading into the competition.

"Preparation is all about being consistent, every training session, every recovery session and every small improvement counts. I'm confident, I've trusted my preparation, and I'm ready to give everything for the team. Representing India is my biggest motivation, and I hope we can make the country proud." he said.

Having already contributed to several landmark performances in Indian athletics, Rajesh now heads to Glasgow with the opportunity to further strengthen his legacy. A strong showing at the Commonwealth Games would not only enhance his own career but also reinforce India's growing stature in the 4x400m relay events on the global stage.
