Commonwealth Karate championship allotted to India

Chennai, Nov 21: The 2009 Commonwealth Karate Championship has been allotted to India and it would be hosted by Chennai.

The prestigious event would be organised by the All-India Karate-Do Federation in 2009, its President Karate R Thiagarajan and Patron Karti P Chidambaram said.

They made this announcement at the valedictory of the 21st AIKF Karate nationals championship here.

In the Nationals, hosts Tamil Nadu bagged the overall championship with 20 gold medals.

The Tamil Nadu kata team consisting of K Saravana, T Ashok Kumar and R Masood Ahmed clinched the gold in the senior boys (above-21) section.

The Tamil Nadu team also triumphed in the junior boys (18-20) and junior girls (18-20) kata event.

The TN junior boys kata team comprised Siva Prakasam, Nallavan and T Saravanan, while the junior girls team consisted of M Sindu Parkavi, D Gajalakshmi and V Sudha Priya.

The host finished first in the junior boys (18-20) kumite team section.

Tamil Nadu bagged silver in senior girls (above-21) kata section and second place in the junior girls (18-20) kumite category.

In the senior women's kumite event, Tamil Nadu emerged second.

About 1,000 competitors from all over India participated in 60 events in kata and kumite.
