Cooper Flagg Selected First Overall By Dallas Mavericks In 2025 NBA Draft

The 2025 NBA Draft saw Cooper Flagg chosen first by the Dallas Mavericks, followed by Dylan Harper at second to the San Antonio Spurs. Both players excelled in their collegiate careers.

The 2025 NBA draft commenced with Cooper Flagg being the first pick, as anticipated. The Dallas Mavericks selected the 18-year-old forward, who was recognised as the top college player in the United States after an impressive freshman year at Duke. Flagg's selection came after a challenging period for the Mavericks, following their trade of Luka Dončić in February.

Flagg's performance at Duke was remarkable, leading his team in scoring (19.2), rebounds (7.5), assists (4.2), steals (1.8), and blocks (1.4). His efforts took Duke to the Final Four, and he became only the fourth freshman to win the Wooden Award for best men's college basketball player in the U.S.

Flagg and Harper Top Picks in NBA Draft

The San Antonio Spurs followed by picking Dylan Harper from Rutgers as their second choice, a decision that many had foreseen. Harper, known for his scoring ability and ball-handling skills, averaged 19.4 points per game at Rutgers. He joins Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, recent NBA Rookie of the Year winners.

The Philadelphia 76ers chose VJ Edgecombe from Baylor with their third pick. Edgecombe is known for his explosive play style. The Charlotte Hornets picked Kon Knueppel from Duke next, making him the second Duke player among the top four picks. Knueppel excelled in three-point shooting with a success rate of 40.6% during his college season.

Ace Bailey was picked fifth by the Utah Jazz after much speculation about his draft position. Initially expected to be chosen third, Bailey had stirred discussions by cancelling workouts with several teams including the 76ers and Hornets. Despite this, his talent on court was undeniable, averaging 17.6 points and showing versatility as a scorer.

Bailey's abilities include effective scoring off dribbles and proficiency beyond the arc with a 34.6% three-point shooting rate. His strength near the basket is evident from his averages of 7.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks over 30 games at Rutgers.

Subsequent Selections and Trades

The Washington Wizards selected Tre Johnson from Texas following Bailey's pick, while Oklahoma point guard Jeremiah Fears went to New Orleans Pelicans next. The Brooklyn Nets then chose BYU's Egor Demin as part of their five first-round picks strategy.

The Toronto Raptors picked Collin Murray-Boyles from South Carolina ninth overall, while Khaman Maluach became another Duke player drafted when Houston Rockets picked him tenth before trading him to Phoenix Suns as part of a deal involving Kevin Durant.

International Players and Late Round Picks

Noa Essengue from France became the first international player drafted at No. 12 by Chicago Bulls. Atlanta Hawks selected Derik Queen but traded him to New Orleans Pelicans shortly after.

The Oklahoma City Thunder picked Georgetown’s Thomas Sorber at No. 15 just days after winning an NBA championship and later traded Nique Clifford from Colorado State to Sacramento Kings after drafting him at No. 24.

Walter Clayton Jr., who starred for Florida’s NCAA national championship team, was drafted by Washington Wizards but will play for Utah Jazz due to a trade involving draft rights swaps between both teams.

Nets' Strategic Moves

In addition to Demin, Brooklyn Nets secured Nolan Traore from France at No. 19 along with Israeli Ben Saraf at No. 26 and Michigan’s Danny Wolf one pick later; they also acquired Drake Powell through trade deals enhancing their roster depth significantly this season.
