CPI(M) seeks inquiry into Commonwealth Games costs

By Samyuktha

New Delhi, Aug 4: As the authorities behind the organisation of the Delhi Commonwealth Games have come under the scanner over allegations of corruption, the CPI (M) has raised concerns over misuse of funds and alleged diversion of funds from the sub-plan meant for development of scheduled castes and tribes.

The cost of renovating the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium was Rs 961 crore, for Indira Gandhi Stadium it was Rs 669 crore, for Dhyan Chand Stadium Rs 262 crore and the Karni Singh Shooting Range Rs 149 crore, senior party leader Sitaram Yechury noted before calling for an in-depth inquiry into the costs.

The total renovation cost for the CWG was R s4,459.48 crore, which is a huge amount, Yechury observed.

"Amazing amounts are being spent on renovating existing facilities. No new facilities are being created for the CWG," the CPI(M) said.

The Left party has sought a statement from the government on this issue as well as whether funds were diverted from the SC/ST sub-plan.

This demand came after the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit denied the very same allegation saying that such diversion of funds can not be done statutorily.
