Dallas Mavericks Part Ways With Jason Kidd After Five Seasons As Coach
The Dallas Mavericks will start the 2026-27 season with a new voice, after mutually ending Jason Kidd’s five-year coaching tenure. The franchise confirmed the move on 19 May 2026 and said the organisation will now begin a full search for a new head coach.
Jason Kidd leaves Dallas with a 205-205 record as head coach, placing Kidd fourth on the Mavericks’ all-time wins list. As a Hall of Fame point guard, Kidd also led the Dallas Mavericks to their lone NBA championship in 2011, strengthening Kidd’s standing within the organisation.

The change follows a recent front-office shift, with Masai Ujiri appointed Dallas Mavericks president and governor two weeks earlier. Ujiri had stated there would be an evaluation of Jason Kidd’s position before any decision on a return, leading to Tuesday’s announcement that both sides agreed to move on.
Ujiri praised Jason Kidd’s influence on the Dallas Mavericks in a formal statement. "Jason has had a meaningful impact on the Dallas Mavericks, both as a Hall of Fame player and as the head coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals," Ujiri said in a statement. "We are thankful for Jasons leadership, his professionalism and his commitment to the team. In my short time here, Ive developed an enormous amount of respect for what he has built. He will always be an important part of the Mavericks family."
On the court, Jason Kidd’s spell with the Dallas Mavericks featured deep playoff runs and sharp decline. Kidd guided the team to the 2022 Western Conference finals and then the 2024 NBA Finals. Momentum shifted after Luka Doni was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a major February 2025 deal.
The Dallas Mavericks missed the playoffs in the season following the Doni trade but drew the No. 1 pick in the draft lottery. Dallas selected Cooper Flagg, who later claimed the 2025-26 Rookie of the Year award. Despite Flagg’s success, the team finished 12th in the West with a 26-56 record.
| Role | Team | Record / Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| Head coach | Dallas Mavericks | 205-205, 2022 West finals, 2024 NBA Finals |
| Head coach | Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks | Career coaching record 388-395 |
| Player | Dallas Mavericks | 2011 NBA championship |
Jason Kidd, now 53, previously guided the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks before returning to the Dallas Mavericks as coach. With the partnership now ended by mutual agreement, Ujiri and the front office will manage a coaching search while Kidd’s history as a title-winning player and Finals-reaching coach remains central to the franchise story.
