Damian Lillard has agreed to a three-year contract worth $42 million to rejoin the Portland Trail Blazers, as reported by ESPN. He hinted at this decision through a social media post tagging the team's official account. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season and a no-trade clause.

Lillard's return to Portland follows an injury-marred period with the Milwaukee Bucks, which concluded with a contract buyout. During his time with the Bucks, he suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon in their first-round playoff loss against the Indiana Pacers. This injury makes it unlikely for him to play next season.

The Bucks decided to buy out Lillard's remaining $113 million contract, setting an NBA record, and subsequently waived him. This move allowed Milwaukee to create salary cap space for free agent center Myles Turner. Lillard had difficulty adjusting to life in Milwaukee after spending his entire career in Portland since being drafted sixth overall by the Blazers in 2012.

In recent trades, Portland exchanged Damian Lillard for Jrue Holiday, Toumani Camara, and assets in 2023. They then traded Holiday to Boston for Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and other assets. These moves have left the Blazers with Lillard, Holiday, Avdija, Williams, Camara, a 2029 first-round pick, and two Milwaukee swaps.

When Lillard returns in the 2026-27 season, he will join a team aiming for playoff contention but needing a star player after trading Anfernee Simons. Last season's second half saw Portland achieve a 23-18 record due to improved defense and emerging talents like Shaedon Sharpe and Donovan Clingan.
