Dariusz, Deysi win world junior chess titles
Chennai, Aug 16: Poland's grandmaster Swiercz Dariusz and Peruvian WGM Cori T Deysi won the titles in the World Junior Open and Girls chess championships respectively while Delhi's Sahaj Grover bagged the bronze with a grandmaster norm to his credit here on Monday, Aug 15.
In a fitting final round encounter in the 50th World Open, Dariusz scored a hard-fought 92-move win over Vladislav Kovalev of Belarus, while Robert Hovhannisyan of Armenia was held to a draw on the top table by Vasif Durarbeyli of Azerbaijan.
With the wins, both these GMs accrued championship points of 10.5 each, forcing a tie for the top two places, but Dariusz pipped the Armenian on progressive score.
International master Grover, who had upset the applecart of GM B Adhiban on Monday, thrived on the opportunity to outclass grandmaster Ter Sahakyan Samvel of Armenia and clinch the bronze medal.
In an Anti-Meran game, Grover, playing with white, displayed grit and determination in grinding down the Armenian GM in a Rook ending in 66 moves.
