Daryl Morey Fired As 76ers President; Nick Nurse To Return As Coach
The Philadelphia 76ers are parting ways with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, while retaining head coach Nick Nurse for next season, according to multiple reports, signalling a major front-office reset shortly after the team’s latest playoff exit.
The organisation appeared to acknowledge the move on social media by posting a photo of Morey with the caption, "thank you, @dmorey." Managing partner Josh Harris added that the team has "fallen well short of our own expectations" after another early end to a promising campaign.

Philadelphia’s decision followed a second-round sweep against the New York Knicks, which ended the 76ers’ playoff run two days earlier. Despite high expectations, the franchise again failed to reach the Eastern Conference finals, keeping pressure on the front office and current roster structure.
Morey had served as the 76ers’ top basketball decision-maker for six seasons, during which Philadelphia recorded a 270-212 regular-season mark. The 76ers reached the playoffs five times and won four series under Morey, yet the team never progressed beyond the second round.

Roster moves during Morey’s time in charge produced mixed outcomes. The front office secured star backcourt pairing Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe, helping Philadelphia defeat rival Boston Celtics in a first-round series this season. However, several large financial commitments limited flexibility and later drew scrutiny from observers.
Morey authorised major contract extensions for Joel Embiid and Paul George, but recurring injuries left those deals difficult to trade. Another key decision came when Morey sent former first-round pick Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where McCain has become a rotation piece for a postseason team currently 8-0.
Former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers will now lead the search for the next president of basketball operations. With Nick Nurse remaining and a star core still in place, the 76ers enter a crucial off-season, aiming to match organisational ambitions with deeper playoff success.
