By Staff

Chennai, Oct 22 (UNI) World number six Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, who conquered world number one Rafael Nadal in Miami Masters, has become the first star player to confirm his participation in the 4,50,000 dollar Chennai Open-2009 ATP Tennis Event to be held here from January 5 to 11.

Winner of 14 ATP titles, Davydenko, nicknamed ''The Iron Man'' for making most appearances in an ATP calendar year or sometimes ''The Machine'' due to his aggressive, consistent style of play, would be playing for the first time in Chennai, a release said today.

He registered his biggest career title to date at the Miami Masters when he defeated Andy Roddick in the semi-finals and Rafael Nadal in the final en route to his title triumph.

Davydenko's best result in a Grand Slam tournament was his two semi-final appearances, twice each at the French Open and the US Open.

Confirming his participation, Davydenko said he was very excited to play in the Chennai Open. The tournament has become very popular on the circuit.

''I am looking forward to play in Chennai and hope to make a good start to the New Year and improve my performance,'' he added.
