De'Aaron Fox Agrees To Four-Year, $229 Million Max Contract Extension With Spurs

De'Aaron Fox, who joined the San Antonio Spurs six months ago through a trade, has committed to a long-term stay with the team. On Monday, Fox reportedly agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $229 million. This deal, which does not include a player option, secures his position with the Spurs until the end of the 2029-30 NBA season.

The Spurs acquired Fox from the Sacramento Kings on February 3 as part of a three-team trade. They hoped his skills would boost their play-off chances. However, those hopes were dashed when Victor Wembanyama was sidelined due to a blood clot in his shoulder. Consequently, Fox and Wembanyama only played five games together.

Despite limited appearances for San Antonio last season, Fox showed promise by averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.47 steals over 17 games. His overall performance included an impressive personal-best of 60 points against Minnesota on November 15 while playing for Sacramento.

Fox's career began when he was drafted fifth overall by the Kings in 2017. Over his career spanning 531 games, he has averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. His achievements include an All-Star selection in the 2022-23 season and being named to the All-NBA third team that same year.

The Spurs are optimistic about their play-off prospects with Fox as part of their young core. Wembanyama recently announced he is fully recovered from his shoulder issue and ready to return to basketball activities. Additionally, Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle is expected to continue developing alongside Dylan Harper, who was picked second overall in June's draft.

Fox's time with Sacramento saw him make just one play-off appearance over seven seasons. Now at age 27, he aims to help lead San Antonio back into post-season contention alongside promising teammates like Wembanyama and Castle.
