Debutants Chirag United rally to shock giants Mahindra United

By Staff

Mumbai, Oct 4 (UNI) Local giants and former National Football League champions Mahindra United were given a rude shock and that also in their own backyard when debutants Chirag United defeated them 3-1 in the second round I-League match at the Cooperage here today.

Chirag United, the newly promoted side from Bengal, rallied splendidly after going down a goal early in the ninth minute to notch up their first win after their opening loss to East Bengal to be on three points from two matches, while for Mahindra United it was their second successive defeat in as many matches, after losing to Churchill Brothers in the first.

Mahindra started the match confidently with Sushil Singh putting them ahead in the ninth minute, with a header but they were hard-pressed for the remainder of the first half.

After Muritala Ali restored parity for Chirag immediately on resumption in the second session, the Mumbai side was found wanting in midfield. The Chirag medios repeatedly split the Mahindra defence and went ahead in the 52nd minute through Gauranga Datta to take control of the match.

First-half substitute Hardeep Singh, sealed the issue when he found the net following a pass from Ali three minutes from the final whistle.

Hardeep Singh Saini was later adjudged Man of the Match which made him richer by Rs 5000.
