DeChambeau Changes Mindset and Secures Weekend Spot at British Open

Bryson DeChambeau faced a challenging start at the British Open, leaving Royal Portrush feeling defeated after his first round. However, on Friday (July 18), he adopted a new perspective.

"I said, 'You know what, I can't give up,'" DeChambeau shared. Encouraged by his father's advice to persevere, he improved significantly with a 6-under 65 in the second round, securing his place for the weekend.

DeChambeau Changes Mindset to Make Cut at British Open

High-Profile Exits

Several notable players failed to make the cut. Brooks Koepka, seeking Ryder Cup points, ended with a 74, leaving him at 7 over. This marked his third missed cut in four majors this year. Cameron Smith, the 2022 champion, also missed out after rounds of 72 and 78. Patrick Cantlay continued his streak of missed cuts at majors with scores of 73 and 72.

Collin Morikawa, ranked No. 6 and a former champion from Royal St. George's, exited early with rounds of 75 and 74. These high-profile exits highlighted the tough conditions at Royal Portrush.

Irish Players' Challenges

Padraig Harrington, a two-time Open winner from Ireland, received warm applause as he hit the first tee shot. Despite the support, he finished with a 76, leaving him at 9 over and missing the cut. Other Irish players like Darren Clarke and Tom McKibbin also failed to advance.

Xander Schauffele maintained his impressive streak by making the cut for the 15th consecutive major. At 2-under par, his chances of winning were slim but still alive. Dustin Johnson narrowly avoided missing all four major cuts in one year by birdieing the last hole for a score of 69.

Veteran Presence

Three players in their 50s will continue into the weekend: Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson, and Justin Leonard. For Leonard, this marks his first cut since 2013 when Mickelson claimed victory at Muirfield.

DeChambeau's performance improved not because he played significantly better but because his putts found their mark this time around. He acknowledged that links golf can be unpredictable: "That's why links golf is the way links golf is." Despite being eleven strokes behind leader Scottie Scheffler, DeChambeau remains determined.

The tournament continues to unfold with unexpected twists and turns as players navigate the challenging course conditions at Royal Portrush.
