Deepika Kumari finishes 8th in ranking round

London, Jul 27: Indian ace archer Deepika Kumari made a decent start to her London Olympics 2012 campaign by finishing eighth in the women's individual ranking round on the opening day of the Games here at the Lord's cricket ground on Friday.

Deepika, the world number one archer, had a sluggish start before picking up pace and moving up the order. She ended with 662 points after 72 arrows. There were two more archers from India in the individual competition and they took 22nd and 50th places.

Deepika disappointed in the first half with 18th rank. But she bounced back in style to be number two in the second half of the ranking round.

Bombayla Devi Laishram was 22nd with a score of 651. Chekrovolu Swuro was 50th with 625 points.

South Korean archers took the top two slots. Bo Bae Ki, with a score of 671 topped the rankings. Sung Jin Lee was second with same score.

The trio featured in the women's team event and India were placed ninth (score 1938) of the 12 teams. They will face Denmark in the first elimination round. If they win, then will lock horns with South Korea for a spot in quarter-finals.

In the first individual elimination, Deepika will clash with Great Britain's Amy Oliver. Bombayla will meet Greece's Evangelia Psarra while Chekrovolo will be up against Jennifer Nichols of USA in the first elimination phase.

India's strong medal contender, world number one archer Deepika Kumari entered the Lord's cricket ground here on Friday afternoon to take part in the women's individual archery event at the London Olympics 2012. Deepika Kumari, Chekrovolu Swuro and Bombayla Devi Laishram are in action.

After 36 arrows, Bombayla was 17th while Deepika was behind her at 18th. Chekrovolu was 52nd.

After 18 arrows, Deepika was placed 36th. Bombayla Devi Laishram is 23rd, Chekrovolu Swuro is in 48th as the competition continues. In team event, the trio is placed 9th now after 54 arrows.

After a disappointing start by Indian men's archers at the same venue earlier in the day, Deepika and her two team-mates Chekrovolu Swuro and Bombayla Devi Laishram will be hoping to bring some good news for Indian fans.

There are 64 women in the individual competition while 12 make up the team event.
