Defending champs Mumbai enter quarter finals

Chennai, Sep 9 (UNI) Defending champions Mumbai trounced Kerala by five wickets to register their third successive win in the league phase and entered the quarter-finals of the All India Buchi Babu cricket tournament here today.

The young Mumbai side, chasing 188 in 90 overs, rode on a strong 74-run first wicket stand between Vinayak Mane (52 rtd hurt) and Wasim Jaffer to reach the target with the loss of five wickets.

Mane retired to give batting pracitise to the youngsters in the team for the forthcoming matches in the tournament.

Mumbai's task was made easy with Abhishek Nayar chipping in 36 off 23 balls with six fours and a six. Left arm spinner V S Shiju was the most successful bowler for Kerala claiming two wickets for 62 runs.

However, both Himachal Pradesh and Vidarbha had to bow out having lost their first two outings in the league and the match being abandoned without a ball being bowled for the secod successive day at the rain socked Vivekananda College ground.

The umpires called off the play today at 1230 hrs after four inspections of the pitch and the outfield. As a consolation the two teams got one point each.
