Toronto, Sep 29: After archers Kevin Tataryn and Dietmar Trillus, two more Canadian athletes have opted out of the Delhi Commonwealth Games due to varying reasons.

While Canadian diver Meaghan Benfeito (21) has withdrawn due to a shoulder injury, badminton player Alvin Lau (25) cited university commitments.

Tataryn and Trillus earlier withdrew from the Commonwealth Games 2010 citing health and security fears.

In the Oct 3 to Oct 14 events Benfeito was slated to participate in the 10-metre platform and the 10-metre platform synchro with teammate Roseline Filion. With Benfeito dropping out, Filion has been teamed up Rachel Kemp.

“Meaghan"s withdrawal will definitely affect our medal potential in both the women"s 10m individual and 10m synchro events. However, Canada does boast incredible depth on women"s tower, and we are confident that Rachel will work hard to help maintain Canada"s reputation as a leading Commonwealth nation in diving," Mitch Geller, the chief technical officer for Diving Canada, said in a statement.

Lau, on the other hand, will not be replaced in the badminton team.

“It"s unfortunate that Alvin will be unable to attend the Commonwealth Games, but we understand the academic standards being enforced at UBC," said Kyle Hunter, Badminton Canada"s executive director.
