Delhi have Tamil Nadu on mat on first day

Chennai, Dec 25 (UNI) Fighting for a place in the knock out semi-finals, Delhi stole the first day's honours pushing Tamil Nadu to the brink by pegging the latter at 250-9 at stumps in the last Super League Elite Group A outing in the Ranji trophy cricket championship here today.

On a bright but battlewise grim day at the M A Chidambaram stadium, Delhi leg-spinner Chaitanya Nanda put his team on top dismissing three Tamil Nadu batsmen in the space of 13 balls to finish with the day's best figures of 3 for 65 as Tamil Nadu batsmen collapsed after a bright start from its openers, left hander and new face Abhinav Mukund(51, 120 balls, 182 mnts, five fours, one six) and right hand batsman M Vijay (77, 150 balls, 240 mnts, eight fours, two sixes).

The pair added 127 in 39 overs for the first wicket, to put the home team on top. But once Mukund fell to Nanda, caught by Akash Chopra at slip, Tamil Nadu lost their momentum and their woes were compounded by the early dismissal of their prolific scoring captain S Badrinath for just nine runs. He followed Abhinav to the pavilion.

The only other respectable individual score for Tamil Nadu was by R Ramkumar, who made 32 off 47 balls with the help of five fours.

Left-arm medium pacer P J Sangwan 2-34 and right-arm medium pacer Rajat Bhatia 2-15 were the other successful bowlers for Delhi, who have to overhaul champions Mumbai in points tally to make it to the semis. Both have 18 points each.
