Dempo coach Colaco dead against four foreigners in a match

By Staff

New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) Dempo coach Armando Colaco today said he was dead against the idea of allowing four foreigners in the playing eleven or first team squad in the I-League.

AIFF had allowed to increase the number of foreign recruits in clubs from three to four this year and two leading clubs had proposed allowing the four foreigners taking the field in a match.

''I was the one who said only two foreigners should be allowed in each club. Now they have increased it to four and there has been proposals to allow all of them in a match.

''How would you develop local (Indian) players if you allow that? Is the League for promoting Indians and Indian football or for promoting foreigners?'' he asked.

Churchill Brothers and Mohun Bagan were for allowing four foreigners in the playing eleven or first team squad.

Their rationale is that it they were allowed to recruit four then why not allowing them to play all of them in a match.

''Churchill and Mohun Bagan supported it, but I am against it,'' Colaco said after the I-League sixth round drawn match against JCT here.

Dempo have signed two foreigners this year in captain Ranty Martins from Nigeria and Brazillian Roberto Mendes da Silva.

JCT coach Sukhwinder Singh did not take positions on the isuue and said, ''The AIFF allowed four foreigners from this year, so we have signed four. It is not our decision, it came from the federation.'' he said.

''We want to promote our boys from Punjab and at the same time it is waste of money to keep one foreign recruit on the bench,'' he said.

Sukhwinder has captain Julius Akpele, Marcos Perreira, Eduardo da Silva and Abdul Latif Seriki as foreign recruits in his side.
