Dempo overpowers Sporting by 2-0

By Staff

Panaji, Sep 30 (UNI) Two second half goals were enough for Dempo Sports Club to overwhelm Sporting Clube de Goa 2-0 in the Vodafone GFA Football league championship match, at Tilak Ground here today.

After a barren first half, Dempo surged ahead in the 49th minute through Nascimento Silveira, who after collecting cross pass from Peter Carvalho, shot into the net to draw the first blood and then, substitute Clifton Gonsalves, off a pass from Jerry Zirsanga, increased the lead during the injury time of the second half to make it 2-0.

Dempo, who had dominated the play with better share of exchanges in both halves, could have won by much bigger margin had forward Joaquim Abranches and Nicolas Borges been quick in grasping a couple of opportunites that came their way.

Even Sporting had a few chances to make a come back into the match, the first one of which came in the 27th minute.

And then Freddy Mascareha's 25 yarder power-packed shot was well saved by Dempo goalkeeper Tyson Caiado in the 73rd minute.

Sporting had a chance to reduce the margin but Junior Eligah's well-attempted shot was fisted over by Dempo Goalkeepr.

With this win, Dempo increased their points tally to 9 points from as many matches, while Sporting remained on same 7 points.
