Diamond-studded replica of 83 World Cup unveiled

By Staff
Mumbai, Oct 19: As Indian celebrates the 25th anniversary of winning the Cricket World Cup, former cricketer and a member of the winning squad Dilip Vengsarkar has unveiled a diamond-studded trophy, a replica of 1983 World Cup, to be presented to the championship heroes in Dubai.

All rounder Kapil Dev inspired his unfancied team to an unlikely 43-run win over the West Indies after a sensational batting collapse dashed Caribbean hopes for a title hat-trick at Lord's. Vengsarkar said the credit for the World Cup victory should go to skipper Kapil Dev for his brilliant performance throughout the tournament. "It was fantastic achievement. A match after match, Kapil Dev performed single handedly. It was absolutely brilliant performance from him," he said.

The trophy made by a jewellery firm, is created using 25-carat diamond and will be presented to the world cup heroes at an event in Dubai on October 23.

The diamond-studded trophy is created with a fine blend of 82.2 gram gold with 7118 diamonds and 36 rubies.

Although reigning champions Australia have won four one-day World Cup titles, India regard the win as special because it lifted a nation starved of sporting success.
