Divya Deshmukh Set for Global Chess League Debut Alongside Magnus Carlsen

Indian chess sensation Divya Deshmukh is set to embark on a new chapter when she makes her Tech Mahindra Global Chess League debut for defending champions Alpine Pipers in Bengaluru on September 5.

The 20-year-old, who was recently selected for the prestigious Arjuna Award, will be part of a star-studded Pipers squad that also includes world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi and Volodar Murzin.

Used to the demands of individual competitions, Deshmukh is relishing the prospect of competing in the league's fast-paced rapid format and experiencing the energy of a home crowd.

"It's my debut, so I'm definitely very excited. It's not like any other chess tournament. There's going to be a lot of audience for this one, which is going to be really nice. And also, the format is quite different to classical events, so it's fun. Playing in India is always fun ," Deshmukh said.

The prospect of sharing a team with Carlsen has naturally attracted attention, but Deshmukh stressed that the depth of the Alpine Pipers roster is what makes the experience particularly exciting.

"I guess it's always great to have a teammate that is considered one of the best in the world. But for me, it's also not just Magnus in my team. There are so many great players overall. There's Anish, there's Vidit, and there's also Murzin. So, it's not just about one person. It's about the whole team," she added.

With the league offering a very different competitive environment, Deshmukh believes the true value of the experience will only become clear once she has played through the tournament.

"If I can take lessons from it, we will only find out after the event. I can't say anything now. But yeah, I'm very excited to play this format, " she said.

Her Bengaluru trip will also carry a personal significance, with the upcoming tournament giving her a chance to properly explore the city for the first time.

"I've only been to Bengaluru airport. This is the first time into the city," Deshmukh said.

The fourth season of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League will bring together 36 elite players across six international franchises. The mixed-team tournament will take place at The Lalit Ashok in Bengaluru from September 5 to 13, with Deshmukh's debut adding another layer of interest to the defending champions' campaign.
