Luke Donald and Jhonattan Vegas expressed satisfaction with their performances during the first round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Ryder Cup captain Donald ended the day tied for fourth with a score of four under par. Meanwhile, Vegas emerged as the unexpected leader, finishing at seven under par, two strokes ahead of Cameron Davis in second place.
Donald, aged 47, found himself near the top of the leaderboard, a position he did not anticipate. He was included in the tournament due to the tradition of inviting Ryder Cup captains. Keegan Bradley, captain of the US Ryder Cup team, concluded his round tied for ninth at three under par. "I'm here only because I'm captain of the European Ryder Cup team. I wouldn't be in this field otherwise," Donald stated during a press conference after his round.

The key to Donald's strong performance was his consistency. He managed to avoid any bogeys and recorded four birdies throughout his round. "Bogey-free in a major championship on a course that you wouldn't have thought would be ideal for me is always fun," he remarked. Donald credited his steady start and accurate shots on the front nine for boosting his confidence.
Vegas was surprised by his own score after leading on day one. "Incredible. Any chance you get to shoot 64 at a major championship is always great," he shared in a press conference. Despite challenging conditions, he felt fortunate to tee off late when the course was drying quickly.
Vegas has faced numerous injuries over recent years, making it difficult to perform consistently at major events. However, he remains determined to excel in such tournaments. "I've gone through a lot of injuries and that type of stuff and hasn't been easy the past few years," he explained.
The golfer emphasised that while his game has always been strong, executing it well during crucial moments is essential. "It's about putting it together and playing your best when it's time to play," Vegas noted. His aim is to continue placing himself in competitive positions during significant tournaments.
The opening round at Quail Hollow set an exciting tone for both players as they navigated their way through challenging conditions with impressive skill and determination.
