Donovan Mitchell Contract Extension: Four-year USD 273 Million Deal With Cleveland Cavaliers
Donovan Mitchell is set to remain the centrepiece in Cleveland after agreeing a long-term deal. The Cleveland Cavaliers star has accepted a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The agreement reportedly includes a player option for the 2030-31 campaign and a full trade kicker. Mitchell had been entering the final guaranteed year of the contract signed in July 2024.
The extension confirms the Cavaliers’ commitment to building around Mitchell as an NBA title contender. Since arriving in a trade from the Utah Jazz in the summer of 2022, Mitchell has lifted Cleveland back into the play-offs each season. The Cavaliers had missed the post-season in the four years after LeBron James’ second exit from the franchise.

Mitchell, 29, delivered one of the best individual seasons in the NBA during the last campaign. Mitchell ranked seventh in scoring with 27.9 points per game and placed eighth in three-pointers made at 3.2 per game. The guard also averaged 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds, earning All-NBA second-team recognition while leading the Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference finals.
Cleveland’s post-season run ended with a sweep against the New York Knicks in that conference finals series. After the Game 4 defeat, Mitchell spoke about commitment to the organisation and ambitions with the current group. "I love it here,he said when asked about an extension. I don't know how else to say it. I have no doubt these guys can get there. We have unfinished business."
The reported structure of Mitchell’s new deal gives both security and flexibility for player and team. The contract runs for four additional seasons, with the player option allowing Mitchell control over the 2030-31 season. A full trade kicker is also included, which would trigger a bonus if Mitchell is traded during the life of the extension.
News of the agreement first emerged via Shams Charania on social media, citing agent Austin Brown.
Donovan Mitchell Cavaliers achievements, All-Star history and future context
Mitchell’s resume during four seasons with the Cavaliers already includes one All-NBA first-team and two All-NBA second-team selections. Across nine NBA seasons since being drafted 13th overall by the Jazz in 2017, Mitchell holds career averages of 25.1 points, 4.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds. Mitchell is a seven-time All-Star, underlining status among the league’s elite perimeter players.
The new agreement arrives amid wider interest around Cleveland’s future roster. Reports have linked the Cavaliers as a possible destination for LeBron James in the coming weeks. With Mitchell under contract on a maximum extension and the team returning to regular play-off appearances, Cleveland’s front office now has a clearer foundation for any further major moves.
Mitchell’s decision to commit long term, combined with sustained All-NBA form and deep play-off progress, strengthens Cleveland’s status among Eastern Conference contenders. The guard’s production, contract structure and public statements about "unfinished business" suggest the Cavaliers will continue to build around Mitchell as they chase an NBA championship in the coming seasons.
