Doping Scare at U-20 Athletics Meet: Syringes Found in Room of UP Athletes

Three athletes from Uttar Pradesh, including two minors, are under suspicion for doping after syringes were allegedly found in their possession during the National Junior Federation Competition in Tumakuru. The development has raised fresh concerns about doping practices in Indian athletics.

Doping

According to a report by Deccan Herald, the incident came to light after officials at a local hotel near the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium noticed a strong smell of medicines coming from a room occupied by the athletes. Upon inspection, a plastic bag containing multiple syringes was allegedly recovered from the room.

Syringes allegedly found in athletes' hotel room

The three athletes included a 19-year-old 400m runner along with two minors who were competing in the 5000m and 1500m events. None of the athletes progressed to the finals of their respective qualifiers.

Officials reportedly identified the occupants of the room, after which the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) was informed about the matter. However, by the time anti-doping officials reached the location, the athletes - along with an accompanying adult - had already left the hotel.

Sources cited in the Deccan Herald report indicated that the adult accompanying the athletes is a former athlete and is suspected of influencing the young competitors into substance use.

Incident comes amid rising doping concerns in India

The suspected violation comes shortly after India was flagged as an "extremely high-risk" country for doping by the World Athletics Integrity Unit. The issue has also drawn attention at the international level, with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Witold Banka recently urging Indian authorities to take stronger action against doping.

Efforts are currently underway within the Indian government to criminalise doping offences, particularly as India continues its push to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

Possible violation of 'No Needle Policy'

Possession of syringes is a direct violation of the Athletics Federation of India's (AFI) 'No Needle Policy', which strictly prohibits athletes and staff from carrying or using syringes without medical justification.

Under AFI regulations, violations involving syringes can lead to immediate disqualification and suspensions of up to three years. If linked to banned substances, NADA could impose suspensions of up to four years.

Officials also noted that syringes were reportedly found in stadium washrooms on the opening day of the competition, prompting increased monitoring of athletes during the event.

Investigation ongoing as authorities track athletes

The Athletics Federation of India has confirmed that the matter is under investigation. Authorities are also attempting to trace the whereabouts of the athletes involved.

The three-day National Junior Federation Competition concluded on Sunday, featuring over 1,000 participants. The event served as the final selection trials for the upcoming U-20 Asian Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in Hong Kong in May.

Further developments are expected once anti-doping authorities complete their investigation.
