Dustin Johnson headlines crowded leaderboard at Players Championship

Florida, May 11: Dustin Johnson made the most of good scoring conditions to be in a six-way tie for The Players Championship lead after the first round on Thursday (May 10).

Johnson, Webb Simpson, Chesson Hadley, Alex Noren, Matt Kuchar and Patrick Cantlay all shot six-under 66s at TPC Sawgrass.

Simpson, Noren and Johnson all exploited the course in the morning as they were at six under before the afternoon rounds even teed off.

Johnson posted a clean card with six birdies and no bogeys and the world number one was pleased with his putting.

"I don't think I putted very well around here as a whole," Johnson told reporters after his round.

"That's one thing I've struggled around here with, and today I rolled it nicely."

The feature group of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler did not have the best luck as none of them managed to break par.

Woods had the best round with an even-par 72, but he was so frustrated with how he played much of the day, he fist-pumped a bogey on 18.

"I felt like the way I was feeling today, I should have shot something in the 60s," Woods told Golf Channel. "I didn't do it."

Fowler finished with a two-over 74 while Mickelson shot a seven-over 79.

Other notables included Jason Day, who shot a three-under 69, Rory McIlroy (71) and Jordan Spieth, who finished with a disappointing three-over 75.

Kim Si-woo, who became the youngest winner of the event last year, made a bright start with a five-under 67.
