'Emotional' Mickelson overcomes wife's battle with cancer to win Augusta Masters

New York, Apr 12 (ANI): Golfer Phil Mickelson, who has refused to be bogged down by his wife's ongoing fight with cancer and its constant hurdles, won his third green jacket by sinking a final birdie putt at Augusta Masters.

Mickelson reminded everyone that nothing is bigger than the Masters and hugged his wife, Amy, the woman he has stood by during her battle with cancer.

"I don't normally shed tears over wins, and when Amy and I hugged off 18, that was a very emotional moment for us and something that I'll look back on and just cherish. I mean, I'll cherish every moment of this week. This has been a very special week," Mickelson said.

He had been slumping all season and many close to him said, inwardly, he was burdened by his wife's fight against cancer, the Daily News reports.

Mickelson's caddie, Jim Mackay, knew it and burst into tears on the 18th green, and wasn't able to control himself enough to do interviews immediately afterward.

Mickelson said Augusta National always brings out the best in him. To have his family with him for the first time since last May made it fun again.

"I really want to recognize my family," Mickelson said at the victory ceremony, Amy and the three children nearby.

"My wife . . . we've been through a lot this year and it means a lot to share some joy together. She's an incredible wife, an incredible mother and has been an inspiration to me this past year. I can't put it into words but it's something we will share and remember the rest of our lives."

Mickelson did this in style. He shot a 5-under-par 67 to get to 16-under 272 (the lowest score by a Masters champ since Woods in 2001) and beat Lee Westwood (71) by three shots, with Woods (69) tied for fourth, five behind. (ANI)
