Unfazed with ligament tear, English Channel winner Sayani Das aims to cross Rottnest Channel

Kolkata, Dec 17: Sayani Das grabbed media headlines in July this year after having crossed the English Channel.

The girl from Kalna district of West Bengal has decided her next assignment after coming back from Dover. She now wants to cross Rottnest Channel in Western Australia, which is also a tough channel to cross.

Sayani had gone to Puri, earlier this month, as a part of the preparation for her next assignment. Her father Radheshyam Das who trains her since childhood was with her. But while returning from Puri she tore her ligament, spoiling chances of crossing Rottnest Channel which she had planned to cross in February next year.

Sayani has been lying on the bed with a plaster on her left foot in her residence.

Speaking about the jolt she received, Sayani said, “I was supposed to start for Perth on 19th February. I had planned to start swimming in the channel from 24th February. But now will be possible now. Everything has been postponed.”

Still the 24-year-old swimmer is not giving up. She is reading books, watching television to prepare her mind.

Sayani added, “Actually, a swimmer needs the highest level of endurance to sustain the open water swimming. So in a bid to increase that ingredient, I was practising in River Ganga near my home as well as in the sea in Puri. It was going on perfectly under the observation of my father. I am not giving up at all with the injury. After one month the plaster will be opened and then again I resume training in Ganga.”

She conveyed that now while lying on the bed she is reading some inspirational books, written on the life of great sports personalities like Michel Phelps, Roger Federer.

Sayani was competing in the competitive swimming championships seems choosy on the issue.

She said, “I want to stick to open water swimming and want to cross more channels. I know poor infrastructure in the competitive swimming in Bengal will not help me become the swimmer of an international swimmer.”
