Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers has been honoured as the Defensive Player of the Year for the 2024-25 NBA season. The announcement was made on Thursday, with Mobley securing 35 out of 100 first-place votes. He narrowly surpassed Dyson Daniels from the Atlanta Hawks and Draymond Green from the Golden State Warriors, who received 25 and 15 first-place votes respectively.
Mobley, a former third overall pick from USC, is now among a select group of players to win this award at the age of 23. No player younger than 23 has ever achieved this feat. Throughout the regular season, Mobley was instrumental in Cleveland's success, leading them to 64 victories. His defensive stats included an average of 9.3 rebounds, 1.59 blocks, and 0.86 steals across 71 games.

The Cavaliers ranked eighth in defensive efficiency this season, conceding just 109 points per 100 possessions. Mobley's performance was crucial to this achievement. Before the season began, he expressed his ambition to be recognised as the league's top defender.
Last year's recipient, Rudy Gobert from the Minnesota Timberwolves, managed to secure one third-place vote this time around. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs was initially favoured to win but played only 46 games due to health issues.
This marks the third year that the NBA has presented the Defensive Player of the Year award with the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy. Named after a legendary Houston Rockets player, this trophy symbolises excellence in defensive play within professional basketball.
Mobley's recognition underscores his significant contribution to his team's defensive prowess and highlights his personal growth as a formidable player in the league.
