'No. 4 ki list pe to India top pe hai na?' - Fans express frustration after Mirabai Chanu becomes yet another Indian to finish 4th at Paris Olympics

By Triyasha Chatterjee

Indian fans were left heartbroken as another athlete narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Tokyo silver medalist Mirabai Chanu delivered a commendable performance in the women's 49kg weightlifting final, but her efforts were not enough to clinch a medal, leading to a collective sense of disappointment among the Indian supporters.

Chanu's fourth-place finish was a tough pill to swallow for Indian fans, who had high hopes for a medal. This disappointment was compounded by similar near-misses in other events. Manu Bhaker, in the shooting events, came agonizingly close to a medal but ended up in fourth place.

Lakshya Sen, representing India in badminton, also missed out on a bronze, finishing just outside the top three. Arjun Babuta, another shooting prospect, finished fourth as well, despite a strong showing. The Indian archery mixed team, another strong contender, also fell short of the podium, adding to the series of near misses.

The collective sentiment among fans was one of sorrow and frustration, with many quipping about India's streak of fourth-place finishes. Social media was flooded with fans expressing the heartbreak of consistently falling just short of the podium.

"No. 4 ki list pe to India top pe hai na? Ki yahan bhi short reh gaye hum? (We are top on the list of No. 3, right? Or Are We Falling Short There too?) Another night, another heart break! #MirabaiChanu missed it by a whisker," wrote a user on X, formerly Twitter.

"4th is the new bronze for India, " added another. "If someone asks me how was India's olympic performance in 2024 I will just say 4th position, " wrote a third.

In the snatch category, Chanu successfully lifted 85kg on her second attempt and improved to 88kg on her third, showcasing her formidable strength and technique. However, the competition was fierce, with top contenders pushing the limits.

Moving into the clean and jerk segment, Chanu managed 111kg on her first attempt, bringing her total to 199kg. Despite her determined efforts, this total was not enough to surpass the top three competitors, who delivered exceptional performances.

The gold medal was claimed by Hou Zhihui of China, who set an Olympic record with a total of 206kg, lifting 89kg in snatch and 117kg in clean and jerk. Romania's Mihaela Valentina Cambei took silver with a total of 205kg, lifting 93kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk. Thailand's Surodchana Khambao secured bronze with a total of 200kg, lifting 88kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk
