Following a series of setbacks for Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics, Indian fans have pinned all their hopes hopes Neeraj Chopra. The 26-year-old javelin thrower, who claimed India's second-only individual gold medal in the Olympics, will be looking to retain his honour.
India's Olympic campaign has seen mixed fortunes so far. The Indian contingent has managed to secure three bronze medals, positioning them at the 63rd spot on the medals tally. Despite these achievements, recent events have dampened spirits.

On Tuesday, Vinesh Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to advance to the Olympic final round. However, her joy was short-lived as she faced disqualification due to being overweight by just a few grams. This unexpected turn of events left her and her supporters devastated, highlighting the fine margins that can make or break an athlete's Olympic dream.
"I read this morning about Vinesh Phogat and it was very disappointing to hear about it. Now I just hope that Neeraj Chopra wins a medal for us, " said Lakshmi speaking to myKhel representative Paridhi Bhanot at the India house in Paris.
"It is heartbreaking, she worked the whole night and she was disqualified for just 100 gm, as a fan we were counting on her. Now are counting on Neeraj Chopra for the gold medal, I will be at home with all my friends cheering for him, " said Dimit, another Indian living in Paris.
Amidst these challenges, Neeraj Chopra's performance has provided a beacon of hope. His qualification for the final round in his first attempt at a season's best 89.34m has not only boosted the morale of the Indian contingent but gave Indians a ray of positivity. This performance has reignited India's aspirations for Olympic glory.
As he prepares to compete for the gold, millions of Indians will be cheering him on, hoping he can deliver a historic victory.
" We are eagerly waiting for the javelin throw event to watch Neeraj Chopra. I am so proud and I can't wait to see him and I think India has the chance to win a gold, " said Indian -origin French Hema who was enjoying the festivities and celebrations at India House as well.
The men's javelin throw final begins at 11:55 PM IST on Thursday, August 8. The event will take place at the Stade de France.
