Federation Cup Athletics Highlights Day 4: The 26th National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships reach their final day on Thursday (May 18) with Asian Athletics Championships and World Athletics Championships berths up for grabs at Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi.
The morning session of the final session saw Gulveer Singh win the men's 5000m final after he won the 10000m final on the opening day of the tournament. The 24-year-old long-distance runner has now qualified for the Asian Athletics Championships in both events. Uttarakhand's Ankita won the women's 5000m. Delhi's Chanda put up a strong show to win women's 800m gold. She also qualified for the Asian Athletics Championships while rewriting the Federation Cup record with a timing of 2:01.79 seconds. National record holder Tintu Luka earlier held the meet record at 2:01.84 secs. Lavika Sharma (silver), Twinkle (bronze) and Pooja also qualified for the Asian Championships.

Haryana's Krishan Kumar clocks 1:46.83 seconds to win the men's 800m final. Krishan also breached the Asian Championships qualification mark with the timing. Mohammed Afsal (silver), Ankesh Chowdhury and Anu Kumar also finished inside the Asian Championships qualification mark.

CWG silver medallist Abdullah Aboobacker jumped a 16.76 metre to win the men's triple jump final. Karthik Unnikrishnan came second with a leap of 16.44m.

Karnataka's Yashas P posted his personal best of 49.40 seconds to win the 400m hurdles final while competing against MP Jabir (49.99 seconds), Dharun Ayyasamy (51.42 seconds). Sathosh T, who won the heats yesterday, clocked 49.51 seconds to finish second. Yashas and Santhosh also qualified for Asian Championships.

Rohit Yadav registered his personal best of 83.40m while competing against DP Manu (82.95m) to win the Federation Cup men's javelin throw final.

National record holder Amlan Borgohain continued his dominance in 200m with a win at the Federation Cup. Amlan clocked 20.83 seconds early in the outdoor season to take the race. Animesh Kujur was a close second with a timing of 20.94 seconds. Complete results to follow.

Jyothi Yarraji continued her dominance in the Federation Cup as she won the 200m gold as well by defeating the race favourite Archana Suseendran with a timing of 23.42 seconds. This was also the 100m hurdler's personal best in the discipline.

Gulveer Singh (gold), Abhishek Pal (silver), Harman Jot Singh (bronze), Gaurav Mathur, Gurpreet and Sandeep Singh all breached the Asian Athletics Championships qualification standard of 14.00.000 seconds.
Earlier on Day 3, Jyothi Yarraji grabbed the limelight in the women's 110m hurdles with a timing of 12.89 seconds, which was not too far behind her national record of 12.82 seconds. It was also the second quickest timing in Asia this year behind Japan's Asuka Terada, who clocked 12.86 seconds earlier this month.
Also, Tejas Shirse won the men's 110m hurdles with a timing of 13.72 seconds. The Maharashtra youngster, however, failed to breach the Asian Championships' qualification standard of 13.57 seconds. He earlier clocked 13.61 seconds in the heats.
Day 2 saw plenty of medals won too with Srabani Nanda winning the women's 100m dash while her statemate and national record holder Amiya Mallick won the men's event with a timing of 10.31 seconds. Mallick, later, pulled out of the 200m event on Day 3 due to a bad stomach.
The 400m events caught everyone's attention too as Rajesh Ramesh and Muhammad Ajmal clocked sub-46 seconds for the first time with timings of 45.75 and 45.85 seconds. They outran national record holder Muhammad Anas (46.19 seconds) and Arokia Rajiv in a close final.
On the same day, Annu Rani won the women's javelin final with little difficulty as she threw 59.24 metres in her first competition of the season. The national record holder also said she is eager to return to Germany to resume training with her coach Werner Daniels.
