In an extraordinary display of athleticism and determination, Dutch sprinter Femke Bol secured a gold medal for the Netherlands in the 4x400 mixed relay at the Paris Olympics 2024. Bol's remarkable performance, particularly in the final leg, led her team to a victory that stunned spectators and competitors alike.
Bol became a viral sensation not only for her incredible athletic feats but also for her distinctive voice, which many compared to that of Mickey Mouse. The Dutch sprinter’s fame soared after her dramatic finish, where she chased down the US team in the final turn to clinch the gold. The Netherlands completed the race in an impressive 3:07.43, just shy of the world record set by Team USA the previous day at 3:07.41.

Bol’s post-race interview highlighted her excitement and strategy during the race. "It was amazing. I mean, it was such a strong race. We were all running so fast," Bol remarked. "I knew I had to go out fast. I looked in front of me and wanted to be in front. I could hear how far she was behind me. So I was like, okay, this is good. Now we keep going. And this crowd is so amazing."
The Olympics have a history of creating viral stars, and Bol has now joined their ranks. Her incredible finish in the 4x400 mixed relay, where the US team was favored to win, drew immense attention. Social media buzzed with the hashtag "USA destroyed by Mickey Mouse," reflecting both her performance and her unique voice.
The upset was particularly significant for Team USA, which had set a world record the night before and was heavily favored to win the gold. However, in a stunning final lap at the Stade de France, Bol overtook the US team, maintaining the lead established since Vernon Norwood’s opening leg. Despite Kaylyn Brown extending the US lead with 200 meters remaining, Bol’s impressive 47.93-second anchor leg propelled the Netherlands to victory. The Netherlands finished just 0.02 seconds behind the world record and 0.31 seconds ahead of the US, who settled for silver, setting a new European record with their time of 3:07.43.
The Netherlands’ strong start was thanks to Eugene Omalla’s 45.3-second lap, followed by Lieke Klaver’s 49.3-second performance, and Isaya Klein Ikkink’s 44.90-second leg, which set the stage for Bol’s dramatic finish.
Bol described the victory as a form of redemption after the 2023 World Championships, where she fell in the final five meters, allowing the US to win and the Netherlands to miss out on a medal as Great Britain and the Czech Republic surged ahead.
Amidst the celebrations, Bol’s voice also caught the attention of social media. Questions arose about whether her "Mickey Mouse" voice was real. A video from a few months ago surfaced, showing Bol speaking in a normal octave, leading many to believe that the high-pitched voice might have been due to the hot and humid conditions and the adrenaline rush from her performance.
