Fergie feels Roo could surpass Man U legend Giggs 800 appearances

London, Apr.25 (ANI): Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson feels that striker Wayne Rooney has time on his side, plus the energy and hunger to threaten the remarkable longevity of Ryan Giggs.

Giggs will become the first player in Manchester United's history to reach 800 appearances when he faces Tottenham at Old Trafford today. But while it is a record that seems unlikely to be surpassed, Ferguson believes that if Rooney stays clear of injuries, he could do it.

Rooney is only just past his 24th birthday but has already clocked up 230 appearances for United, on top of his 77 for Everton. And if he plays for another 12 seasons, averaging 50 games per campaign, then that would take him past the 800 mark, reports the Daily Express.

"Wayne could certainly do it. He's still a young man. A lot of players are only just starting their careers at his age. What he has achieved so far is quite amazing and he has got the energy, the desire and he will carry on," Fergie was quoted, as saying.

Rooney has hit his best form of the season in recent weeks, equalling last season's tally of 18 goals with his strike against Portsmouth on Wednesday. And Ferguson is expecting a big finish to the season from him.

"His stamina levels are unquestionable. I'm quite amazed at him sometimes. He has got this desire to be involved all the time. Sometimes that can be costly in the sense that he can burn himself out and then, for maybe 10 minutes, he will drop off in a game. But suddenly he explodes again and away he goes. He's amazing. He never stops," said Fergie.

Giggs, 35 , could crown another memorable season - today will be his 41st appearance of the campaign - by winning the Players' Union Player of the Year award for the first time tomorrow night.

"He's the most respected player at the club because what he has achieved is an example to everybody," said Ferguson.

"It's unbelievable to think that Ryan made his debut at about the time Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda were born. And he's still playing with them. I hope he wins the PFA award. Whatever accolades he gets, he deserves. Hopefully, he will be awarded it for his contribution to the game," he added. (ANI)
