Fernando Alonso Discusses Year-by-Year Retirement Plans Beyond His Current Contract In Formula One

Fernando Alonso, a two-time world champion, remains deeply motivated in his Formula One career. At 43, he is the oldest driver on the grid and currently races for Aston Martin. His contract with them extends until the end of the 2026 season, when he will be 45. Alonso has not dismissed the idea of continuing beyond this point, either with Aston Martin or another team.

Alonso's future in F1 has been a topic of discussion, especially with rumours linking Max Verstappen to Aston Martin. Despite these speculations, Alonso prefers to evaluate his career annually. He stated, "Now, I am very motivated, but I cannot guarantee that for three or four years and compromise the team." This approach allows him flexibility while maintaining a strong relationship with Lawrence Stroll and Lance Stroll.

The Spaniard is keen to experience upcoming changes in regulations and Honda's involvement with the team in 2026. He expressed interest in racing through these transitions: "I wanted to race this year for sure and next year for sure because of the change of regulations." However, post-2026 remains uncertain as he plans to assess his motivation each season.

Alonso's career began in 2001, and he remains open to staying involved in F1 even after retiring from racing. He mentioned his willingness to assist the team in any capacity: "I will always be in a position to help the team with whatever they need." Whether behind the wheel or in another role depends on his motivation and performance.

The decision to sign until 2026 reflects Alonso's desire for flexibility while ensuring no long-term commitments that might hinder the team's progress. He values honest discussions with Aston Martin about what benefits both parties: "We can sit and talk honestly between all of us and check what is best for the team."
