Caruana Outplays Nakamura In Opening-Round Clash at FIDE Candidates

One of the headline matches of the round saw Fabiano Caruana defeat Hikaru Nakamura after gaining an advantage in the latter stages of the opening.

Nakamura found himself under mounting pressure both on the board and on the clock. Although he defended resourcefully and created temporary drawing chances, the American grandmaster eventually conceded after Caruana converted his advantage.

After the game, Caruana admitted he felt fatigued but satisfied with the outcome, describing the victory as a strong start to the tournament.

Praggnanandhaa Surprises Giri With Rare Opening Choice

India's R Praggnanandhaa delivered one of the most impressive performances of the day, defeating Anish Giri with confident and precise play.

Praggnanandhaa opted for the Grand Prix Attack, a rare opening choice at this level, catching Giri off guard early in the game. While Giri initially held his position, a later mistake shifted the balance firmly in Praggnanandhaa's favour.

The Indian grandmaster converted his advantage with composed technique in the rook ending, securing one of the standout victories of the round.

Sindarov Capitalises On Time Trouble To Secure Win at FIDE Candidates

Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov also opened his campaign with victory, defeating Andrey Esipenko after a tense middle-game phase.

Esipenko handled the opening well but began to falter as time pressure increased. Sindarov seized the initiative after a key error and steadily improved his position before closing out the game.

Reflecting on the turning point, Sindarov noted that managing time pressure proved decisive in securing the win.

Bluebaum vs Wei Yi Ends In Only Draw Of Round

The only drawn game in the Open Candidates section came between Matthias Bluebaum and Wei Yi.

Both players navigated the opening cautiously, and despite brief chances for initiative, neither side managed to create a decisive breakthrough. The game eventually settled into a balanced endgame that concluded peacefully.

FIDE Candidates Tournament Atmosphere Sets Stage For Competitive Battles

The opening ceremony featured ceremonial first moves and drew large crowds, with the playing hall filled to capacity.

Beyond the matches, the fan zone hosted interactive events, including lectures and masterclasses from legendary players - adding to the festival-like atmosphere surrounding the opening day.

With three decisive results already on the board, the Candidates Tournament has begun with intensity - and the early leaders have made their ambitions clear.
